Discussion and Dialogue

Welcome and work with conflict.

Challenge assumptions while building trust.

Consider and explore issues from many different perspectives.

Don't worry about who is right, but that the thinking is going deeper into the issues.

Encourage and pull everyone to expose their thinking about a common topic or interest.

Choose a conflicting opinion and ask permission for the team to talk about the reasons and intentions of the assumption.

Remember that the goal is not to change the person, but to look and think deeper about the assumption while considering their own assumptions and thinking.

Remind everyone to listen intently to not only what is said, but to the underlying meanings of both what is said and what is not said.

Inquire - ask the right questions so that an invitation to inquire into one's own assumptions will be sensed by the other team members.

Record and list assumptions with exposed intentions.

Particularly capture any shared changes in the team's thinking.

Store

Keep the lists filed under an easily remembered topic and make the record available to all team members.

Retrieve/Share

With the record readily available, needs to refer back or continue the dialogue may occur.

Rather than relying on memory of what occurred, the record provides accurate reflection.
